Facts about Covina
Found in Los Angeles County and part of the San Gabriel Valley, Covina is roughly 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The city has experienced an increase in population in recent years. The census for 2020 found there were 51,268 residents, compared with 47,796 residents at the time of the 2010 census.
Covina has a city slogan: "One Mile Square and All There". The inspiration for the slogan has to do with the incorporated area that is said to be only one square mile.
Joseph Swift Phillips founded what would become Covina in 1882. This was accomplished with the purchase of a 2,000 acre tract of land from John Edward Hollenbeck. Covina was formally incorporated in 1901.
Groves of oranges and grapefruits once surrounded the city. Today, residential dwellings have replaced many of the groves, although some fruit is still grown in the area. The Covina Valley Historical Society preserves Covina's history in the Firehouse Jail Museum. Constructed in 1911, the jail was the city's first municipal building, and is found just behind the city hall in Covina's Old Town district.
