Facts about Burbank
Located at the southeastern portion of the San Fernando Valley, Burbank is part of Los Angeles County. Named after sheep rancher David Burbank, the city is only 12 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1911, the city has a current population of more than 105,000 people.
Burbank gained additional nationwide attention during the 1960s, courtesy of the popular television sketch comedy variety show "Laugh-In". Cast members and guests often referred to "beautiful downtown Burbank" during one of the fast-paced monologues or sketches.
Manufacturing, agriculture, railways, and aviation all played a role in helping the city to grow over the years. While growth paused during the Great Depression, the city began to expand again after World War II.
The entertainment industry, like aviation, has continued to thrive in the area, providing a foundation for continual growth. A number of popular television series of the Fifties through the Eighties, were filmed in Burbank. Several prominent movie studios are in operation in the city, providing many job opportunities to the roughly 100,000 people who work in the city proper.
