Facts about Arcadia

Located roughly 13 miles from downtown Los Angeles, Arcadia is part of Los Angeles County. Named for Arcadia in Greece, the city is in the San Gabriel Valley, at the base of the San Gabriel Mountain range. Parks are one of the features that help to distinguish Arcadia from the other cities and communities found surrounding Los Angeles.

The city posted a population of 56,364 at the time of the 2010 census. 2021 estimates place the current population at 55,345.

With the purchase of 8,000 acres by Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin in 1875, what would become the city began to take shape. It began life as a ranch, but the area was quickly developed. The advent of a main line of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad made the ranch viable for the establishment of a town.

By the dawn of the 20th century, the community had grown to include 500 people. In 1903, Arcadia was formally incorporated as a city, with Baldwin serving as the first mayor. Agriculture and chicken farming were vital to the area as it slowly made a transition into a residential community. The transition brought changes, like the addition of a city hall, a library, and a school system.

Today, Arcadia offers a varied employment climate that includes businesses associated with the wholesale and retail trades, arts and entertainment, health care, recreation, and manufacturing. Thanks to the revenue generated by the Santa Anita Racetrack since 1934, Arcadia has been able to grow without the need of incurring much in the way of bond obligations.
